Maude Saunders, an education pioneer, was born in DeFuniak Springs on June 24, 1885. She spent most of her career at Walton High School, teaching science and Latin. She earned her Masters Degree from the University of Florida during summer sessions and was promoted to principal of the high school. This photograph was taken in 1927 when the high school annual, The War Whoop, was dedicated to her. The Maude Saunders Elementary School in DeFuniak Springs is named in her honor. At the end of her career she pioneered the development of the education curriculum for veterans returning from World War II. After her retirement, DeFuniak Springs Mayor Stealie Monroe Preacher proclaimed June 30, 1955, “Miss Maude Saunders Day.”
