We couldn’t do what we do at the Walton County Heritage Association (WCHA) without our dedicated volunteers. Whether they are acting as museum docents, assisting visitors in our historic train depot location, or helping neighbors explore their roots in our genealogy section, volunteers keep our local history alive every day.

If you’re thinking about volunteering at the Museum, here are 5 reasons why you should!

  • You love to learn about local history.
Volunteers have unique opportunities to dive into the rich stories of Northwest Florida, from Civil War history to the development of DeFuniak Springs, through specialized docent training.

  • You want to preserve your community’s legacy.
Volunteers play a vital role in preserving and restoring landmarks of historical interest within Walton County, ensuring these stories remain for future generations.

  • You are interested in genealogy and research.
With our dedicated genealogy society and newsletters, volunteers can help others—and themselves—connect with family histories and regional archives.

  • You like to meet people who share your passion.
As a volunteer-operated organization, you’ll join a close-knit group of individual citizens and local businesses who are all passionate about protecting our unique heritage.

  • You want to make a meaningful impact.
Volunteering with a nonprofit association provides valuable experience in community engagement, education, and historic preservation.
