Welcome to all who are attending the Florida Chautauqua this week!

George B. Utley in his article, "Origin of the County Names in Florida," (1908) wrote about Walton County:

Named for Colonel George Walton, secretary of West Florida during the territorial governorship of Andrew Jackson, 1821- 22; and secretary of the entire territory, 1822-26. Son of George Walton, governor of Georgia and Signer of the Declaration of Independence. Tallahassee (meaning beautiful land) was so named by Walton’s daughter, Octavia.

The Lakewood Star

We are pleased to offer all known copies of The Lakewood Star in our Newspaper Archives. The Star provides a glimpse of life in the thriving lumber town of Lakewood in 1908 and 1909. The scans are copies of copies, so transcripts have been provided. Part of the humor of The Star is the frequent and probably intentional misspelling of words; e.g., “catarrh” and “catar” mean guitar.

Tom McNeill, whose family owned Britton Lumber Company, contributed the copies. His grandmother, Hazel Slaughter, married Tom Britton and served as the "stenographer" for The Lakewood Star. We thank Tom McNeil for the copies of the Star and for his many contributions to our museum from Lakewood and the Britton Lumber Company.

If you notice any errors in the transcripts, or you have copies of other Walton County publications you would be willing to donate, please email the museum.
