From Andersonville to Freedom

Charles M. Smith, who served with the First Massachusetts Cavalry, presented a paper to the Rhode Island Soldiers and Sailors Historical Society, which was published in 1894 as part of the Society’s series, Personal Narratives of Events in the War of the Rebellion. Smith’s paper, From Andersonville to Freedom, tells of his capture, his confinement at Andersonville Prison, his escape, and his journey, mostly by water, to reconnect with Federal troops in Pensacola. Walton County plays an important role in the narrative. LaGrange is mentioned (page 59), and letters written by Eli Wright of Euchee Anna and George Reddick of Freeport are quoted (pages 70-71).
